The inventor of the social satire was born in Genoa, 31 December 1932, not 1938 as many believe, quite poor, and spends a childhood ruined by World War II. Said later: ” At that time I was on a diet, not dictated by the desire to seem but poverty . ”
To discover the artistic vein Village was Maurizio Costanzo , who in 1967 advised him to perform in a cabaret in Rome. From here will lead to the television show “Goodness them,” in which his characters aggressive, cowardly and submissive will find their final consecration.
From TV sets will then be published by the typewriter expressively his short stories centered on the figure of the accountant Ugo Fantozzi, a man of weak character, haunted by bad luck and “megadirettore” of the “megaditta” where Fantozzi works.
In 1971 the publishing house Rizzoli will publish the book “Fantozzi”, based on these stories, giving Paolo Villaggio international fame.
The success of his best-selling book (I will write three, all published by Rizzoli), will give him the opportunity to give to the movies with success and profit. In truth, Village had already worked in films (remember, for all, “Brancaleone at the Crusades” by Monicelli of 1970), but only with the famous film “Fantozzi” by Luciano Salce in 1975 will begin to be appreciated in this field.
Will be followed by many others, as many as 9 on the character of the legendary accountant (1 of Willow, 7 Relatives of Blacks and 1 Dominic Saverino), in addition to those made by interpreting the minor characters, such as Giandomenico Fracchia and Professor Krainz.
At times, and always with skill and luck, Village came out from the routine of his creations, working with the masters of cinema such as Federico Fellini (in 1990 with “The Voice of the Moon,” with Roberto Benigni ), Lina Wertmuller (in 1992 “I hope that I manage”), Ermanno Olmi (in 1993 with “The secret of the old wood”), Mario Monicelli (in 1994 with “fuckin ‘Dear Friends”) and Gabriele Salvatores (in 2000 with “teeth”).
Among the many film awards received by Paolo Villaggio, it is worth remembering the David di Donatello 1990, the Silver Ribbon in 1992 and the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 1996.
In all these years has not yet ceased his work as a writer has continued to publish books of success with regularity, but changing publisher from 1994 until today (it is passed by the Mondandori Rizzoli). For the latter, he published “Fantozzi salutes and leaves” (1994-95), “Life and death miracles of a piece of shit” (2002), “7 grams in 70 years” (2003) until his last desperate outburst: “I’m pissed off like a wild beast” of 2004.
All remember him as a movie actor and writer, he was also a good actor in the theater: it has played in the theater the role of Harpagon in ‘Miser “by Moliere in 1996.
