The sculptor and painter Pietro Cascella was born in Pescara, February 2, 1921.Even very young, following the passion of his father Thomas and his brother Andrew, became interested in painting.In 1943 (only 22 years) participating in the Fourth Quadrennial of Rome. In 1948 Venice Biennale is the first post-war period. In 1938 he moved to Rome where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts with Ferruccio Ferrazzi.
In the years that follow, along with his brother Andrew, works in a kiln for ceramics in Rome in the Valley of Hell. In the early ’50s, always with Andrea, creates works of pottery including large format. In 1956 he participated in the XXVIII Venice Biennale. E ‘of 1958, the initial design for the memorial at Auschwitz (designed with his brother) and the architect La Fuente, who after nine years will be built on a completely new design created by Pietro Cascella.
At the same time works in the sculpture-paintings whose surreal themes deepen after meeting with Sebastian Matta. His research is oriented so to stone and marble materials in which it successfully most of his monumental works. Cascella’s sculptures are usually made of polished petrified masses, corroded, or rough with some basic hints of Cubism along with items geometry of purism.
His solo exhibitions are numerous: among them in 1962 an exhibition of ceramics has been opened at the Obelisk Gallery in Rome, in the same year followed by a solo exhibition at the Million in Milan, in 1965 at the Bonino Gallery in New York, in 1966 there is a hall at the Venice Biennale (also in 1972), then in 1968 at the Galerie du Dragon in Paris and the Musee d’Ixelles in Brussels, in 1971 at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Galerie Buchbolz in Monaco in 1979 in Bavaria, in 1984 in Salt warehouses and Siena. Go back to the ’70s’ “Arch of Peace” in Tel Aviv, “Homage to Europe” in Strasbourg, the “Monument to Giuseppe Mazzini “in Milan,” Sun and Moon “in Riyadh,” Hello Beautiful “Massa. Among the monumental works of the ’80s include “One Hundred Years of work at the Barilla factory” in Parma, the monument to “Two Carabinieri fallen” to Moanteroni d’Arbia, the “Ship” for the city of Pescara and the square in Milan Three.
In the 90′s doing great works such as “Sky Dome” Arcore (Milan) along with other sculptures, fountains and columns as the symbol, ‘”Agora” University of Chieti, the “Monument of the Via Emilia” in Parma , the “Gate of Wisdom” in Pisa, l ‘”Altar of the Sun” to Ingurtosu in Sardinia, the “Theatre of Germination” in the Abruzzo National Park.
In 1999 he made the fountain in the town of Chiavari and the fountain for Baraclit in Casentino, Tuscany. Pietro Cascella, who lived in the castle of Verrucola Fivizzano, not far from Massa Carrara, died on May 18, 2008.
